I’ve never been a cold weather person.
I’ve also never been a runner.
So October 18th should be lots of fun for me. I will be in Denver where it’s already 45 degrees and it’s only September. I will be running the half marathon which is 13 miles, actually 13.1 miles to be exact.
From those facts, it should be easy to deduce that I will not be the happiest camper. I don’t recall the exact moment I was roped into this. I was probably lassoed into it. I had to be. I can’t imagine myself voluntarily agreeing to something like this. Maybe I only heard the word, Denver, and tuned the rest out. Say ‘Denver’ and I’m sold.

I don’t know where my adoration for Denver comes from. There’s no logical explanation… like many of the thoughts floating around in my head.
Denver guidebooks I’ve been pouring through
Well, I guess what better way to see Denver than to run… jog… walk… drag my feet slowly through it? Well, whether I finish it by running like a champ or calling a cab to take me to the finish line, I’m going to be grinning because I’ll be in Denver!

Have you ever run a half marathon or marathon? Do you have any tips?
What’s your favorite city? Why?

Hi, there! Welcome to Denver! I’m training for the full marathon myself. I’d offer you tips for the half, but if you haven’t been training up to now, there’s not much I can tell you that can help at this late stage. I would say that it would help if you can run at least 10 miles in one training session. If you feel undertrained, you may want to try the run/walk method. Run a certain amount of time, then walk a couple of minutes, etc. I’m a slow runner, and I’ve seen people actually pass me using this method (makes me crazy). Make sure you drink something at each of the hydro stations, even if you feel you don’t need it. Wear clothes that you’re comfortable in and that work for the weather conditions of that day (don’t wear anything brand-new). Don’t get so excited at the start of the race that you go out too fast (it helps wearing a stop watch so you can time each of your miles). Pace yourself. Overall, hang in there and good luck!
Hi Lisa,
Thank you so much for your advice! I haven’t trained like I’m sure I should have, but I have been doing more running than I normally do. I definitely need to keep in mind not to get so excited at the start of the race that I don’t pace myself because I find that to be my problem now.
Thanks again!
